Growing up as a good Catholic girl in the Austrian provincial town of Wels in the late 1960s, 9-year old Johanna learns from her grandmother the family's secret: being Jewish, they reinvented themselves as devout Catholics after the war. Johanna is determined not to hide anymore, she wants to be proud of her heritage and decides to become "Hanna". But the "sleeping dogs" are awake, they are starting to bark and to reveal their teeth again.
