Fathers & sons

Vaders & Zonen

netherlands
Directed by: Jörgen Scholtens

In this absurdist tale of arrested development, you’ll meet a decidedly oddball family. Loet is over forty years old and still lives with his younger brother at home with their dominant father Baltus. The two have lived their entire life under their father’s thumb and always obey him. His pension also pays their bills. One day, Baltus dies in front of the TV. Now what? The brothers are in a state of confusion, having always been told they are useless and having never traveled further afield than to the local supermarket. To keep living on their father’s pension, though, they’ll have to find a living replacement to play his role while concealing the death of not-so-dear-old-dad. Reminiscent in style and tone of the Coen brothers, FATHERS & SONS is a deliciously dark and droll comedy.

“The cast is wonderful … [A] little gem that covers a lot of emotional ground in a tight 80 minutes.”
